National Manufacturing Day is Friday, October 4

Glenn Hamer, President/CEO, Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Julie Pastrick, President/CEO, Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, accepting proclamation
from Governor Jan Brewer that October is Manufacturing Month in Arizona at the Governor's Economic Development Conference in Flagstaff on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.

Did you know that in 2012 manufacturers contributed $1.87 trillion to the economy or 11.9 percent of GDP, up from $1.73 trillion in 2011. For every $1 spent in manufacturing, another $1.48 is added to the economy, the highest multiplier of any economic sector. And regarding jobs, manufacturing supports an estimated 17.2 million jobs in the United States—about one of every six private-sector jobs totally nearly 12 million Americans that are employed directly in manufacturing.

Taken alone, manufacturing in the United States would be the 10th largest economy in the world! This is amazing. In 2010 the Flagstaff Chamber established a vital link with this vibrant employer base by forming our Manufacturing Roundtables which meet quarterly with industry leaders, policy makers, and other manufacturing related industries allowing local corporations to stay in Flagstaff to keep current on rules and regulations affecting their livelihood. In addition, the opportunity to connect to other resources available to them to grow their operations is abundant and robust. This roundtable series continues to grow and we are grateful for the involvement of key employers on a regular basis in this vital economic development activity!
Our Board is also fortunate to have three manufacturing businesses represented by Amy Kerr (Nestle Purina PetCare), Joe Pozar, Jr. (Joy Cone) and Jim Corning (Novakinetics). Each of them are heavily involved in the roundtable series, sharing their success, discussing dilemmas and connecting with other like-minded community leaders with whom they can move the needle on a project or situation at hand. Their thought leadership is valued at the Chamber and they help drive our laser focus on their industry for all the right reasons.

It’s a great month to celebrate this vibrant industry. “This is an excellent opportunity to increase awareness of the many diverse manufacturers operating in Arizona and highlight the incredible level of activity surrounding manufacturing taking place in our state on a daily basis,” remarked Keith Watkins, Vice President Rural Economic Development, Arizona Commerce Authority. Keith will be coordinating a statewide promotion through Arizona Commerce Authority with a website dedicated to Arizona manufacturing, This will connect the efforts of various organizations in Arizona to get the good word out about manufacturers in their communities in a very comprehensive and unified manner.
In Flagstaff alone that diversity really stands out: pet foods (Nestle Purina), medical/dental products (W.L. Gore & Associates), ice cream cones (Joy Cone), paper products (SCA Tissue), medical product packaging (Prent), equipment for medical devices (Machine Solutions), aerospace (Novakinetics), snowshoes (Kahtoola), dairy products and general packaging (IML), to name some of our shining stars. And congratulations to W.L. Gore for being named Bioscience Company of the Year by the Arizona Technology Council. Their 40-plus years in Flagstaff has shaped our community character significantly.
The Flagstaff Chamber is privileged to assist our manufacturing partners (and all Chamber members) with our job board at This free member service allows you to post career opportunities to help you find qualified employees and keep your operations going strong.
