Arizona Snowbowl to Add First New Chairlift in 30 Years
Resort Officials Unveil Plan for Additional Lifts in the Future
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Resort officials announced today that Arizona’s most popular ski resort, Arizona Snowbowl, will build the ski area’s first new chairlift in 30 years this summer. Part of a massive $10 million multi-resort capital campaign and slated to open for Christmas 2015, the new lift will provide direct access to some of the mountain’s newest and best terrain.
Named after Humphreys Peak, the highest summit in Arizona and part of the San Francisco Peaks above Snowbowl, Humphreys Peak Lift is the resort’s first quad, a chairlift that accommodates four guests per chair. It will span over a half-mile with a vertical rise of 775 feet and serve popular intermediate trails built in 2011, including Route 66, Pluto and Dutchman.
As part of today’s announcement, general partner Eric Borowsky said that James Coleman, managing partner of Purgatory Resort of Durango, Colorado; Pajarito Mountain of Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort near Taos, New Mexico; has become a partner in the existing Snowbowl partnership.
“Together, with James Coleman and Snowbowl general manager J.R. Murray, our team has already been hard at work to expand and build upon the tremendous success at Arizona Snowbowl, and today’s announcement only accelerates our plans for the future of this resort,” Borowsky said.
Coleman said Snowbowl’s new lift and the snowmaking projects will account for around $2 million of this summer’s $10 million capital campaign, which will add significant mountain improvements across the four southwest resorts. Snowbowl and Sipapu are building new quad chairlifts and Purgatory will replace the Legend’s Lift with a high-speed detachable quad. All four ski areas are adding new trails and improving snowmaking infrastructure.
“Eric Borowsky pioneered one of the most progressive and innovative snowmaking systems in the country to secure the future of the Snowbowl,” Coleman said. “As we look to the upcoming winter and beyond, we are focusing on creating an even better mountain experience for our guests with the installation of the new Humphreys Peak Lift and future high-speed lifts.”
The Humphreys Peak Lift is the first of several new chairlifts planned at Snowbowl. The next lift on the docket is the Grand Canyon Express, Snowbowl’s first high-speed lift. Engineering and planning for the approved Grand Canyon Express, which will serve 90% of the terrain currently served by the popular Agassiz lift, is currently underway, and mountain crews are adding snowmaking infrastructure to support the future lift. An opening date for the new Grand Canyons lift has not been announced.

COLORADO RIVER DAY
A Celebration of a Most Precious Resource
Saturday, July 25th is Colorado River Day marking the 94th anniversary of the Grand River being officially renamed the Colorado River in 1921. The Colorado River stretches for 1,450 miles from the central Rocky Mountains in the U.S. in a southwesterly direction across the Colorado Plateau to Lake Mead, before turning south into Mexico, emptying into the Gulf of California between Baja California and Sonora. Known for its dramatic canyons and whitewater rapids, the Colorado River is a vital source of water for agricultural and urban areas in seven U.S. and two Mexican states. The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce continues to work with corporate executives, water strategists and political leaders to share innovations, best practices and challenges on water conservation and sustainability to preserve the river.
A large portion of Flagstaff’s economy revolves around the direct and indirect positive benefits our community receives from the Colorado River. People travel from all over the world to take their first or tenth trip down the Colorado and use Flagstaff as their base of operations. We have fifteen non-consumptive river running operators that generate $37.5 million annually into our local economy. Flagstaff outfitters pay $2.4 million a year in franchise fees to the National Park Service. The indirect positive economic value is realized in full hotels and restaurants as well as grocery, fuel and other outdoor recreation supply companies which are valued business members of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber.
According to one of our partner organizations Protect the Flows, (www.ProtectFlows.com) the Colorado River would be the 19th largest employer on the Fortune 500 and creates $10.4 Billion in annual earnings, salaries, and wages while supporting 234,000 jobs across Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. A 2014 study from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University estimated impact of Colorado River water loss for the entire Basin Region Economy to be at $1.4 Trillion.
This is a stark reminder of the importance of working together to find sustainable solutions in order to deal with the decade long drought while Lake Mead is at historic low levels. The enormous positives require us to be responsible stewards of this most precious resource.

On its fourth year, the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce and Suddenlink strengthen their partnership to host the community-wide drive to provide much-needed classroom supplies to Flagstaff K-12 teachers at the beginning of school year.
The Chamber also invigorates the Business Donor Program in which businesses and organizations have the opportunity to conduct drive in their offices/ businesses, donate specific branded items, or match cash donations. So far 21 businesses/organizations support the Teacher Supply Drive by gathering supplies for teachers in their respective businesses, Business Donor Program. Boxes are available for pick up at the Chamber. Donated items can be dropped off at either Walmart stores or Sam’s Club during the drive on August 5-8.
As in previous years, the tremendous success of the drive is also attributed to the support of over 100 volunteers who help in many ways during the drive and distribution. The supply drive last year gathered over $40,000 in supplies and distributed to Flagstaff K-12teachers. Be a part of this community-wide drive by volunteering. “Pint Night” at Peace Surplus raises $1,300 for Grand Canyon Youth
Local outdoor retailer Peace Surplus, in conjunction with outdoor travel website RootsRated.com, held its first annual “Pint Night” event raising $1,300 for local non-profit Grand Canyon Youth on Thursday, July 9.
An estimated crowd of over 150 guests packed the downtown outdoor retailer to enjoy pints of craft beer provided by local breweries Flagstaff Brewing Company and Wanderlust Brewing Company. Outdoor enthusiasts, guides, local business people and travelers passing through Flagstaff on vacation were able to purchase Klean Kanteen stainless steel pint glasses provided by RootsRated and filled with their choice of beer for $5.
Live acoustic music was performed by Ry Glover, Associate Editor of RootsRated, for all to enjoy while wetting their whistles. Outdoor apparel and camping gear were given away to random winners throughout the evening, compliments of Peace Surplus.
All of the cash proceeds from the tastings were presented to Emma Wharton, Executive Director of Grand Canyon Youth, on July 10. GCY provides youth (ages 11–19) an experiential education along the rivers and canyons of the Southwest in an effort to promote personal growth, environmental awareness, community involvement, and teamwork among people of diverse backgrounds.

White and colored copy paper, pencils, pens, glue sticks, colored pencils, Kleenex and disinfecting wipes are just a few of the materials Flagstaff teachers are asking for during this year’s Teacher’s Supply Drive.
This year, Coconino Community College will be participating in the “Pack a Crate Challenge” to help donate classroom supplies to the Greater Flagstaff Schools (K-12th grade) and all are asked to help donate supplies at the front entrance of either the Lone Tree or Fourth Street Campuses.
The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce and Suddenlink are conducting their fourth community-wide drive. The Chamber also helps the Business Donor Program in which Chamber members can conduct a drive in offices, donate specific items or match cash donations. Last year, the supply drive gathered more than $40,000 in supplies and more than 100 volunteers participated in the drive and distribution.
The drop-off dates for collected items are Wednesday, Aug. 5 – Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Flagstaff Walmart or Sam’s Club locations. From Aug. 5-7, people can drop off their donations from 1 – 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 8, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Flagstaff ranked #5 for Arizona and #577 in the nation.

Once a frontier state built on mining and agriculture, Arizona’s economy has grown to include health care, financial services, transportation and manufacturing, among other industries.
The state hasn’t forgotten its roots, though. A mix of history and nostalgia draw tourists to cities such as Wickenburg, Prescott and Bisbee for a glimpse of life in what used to be the Wild West.
That steady stream of sightseers has helped make those cities, along with Sedona, Scottsdale and more, some of the best places to start a business in Arizona.
NerdWallet analyzed 65 places in Arizona, each with at least 500 businesses and a population of at least 5,000. We determined the overall score by looking at data from the U.S. Census Bureau to assess each city’s business climate and economic health. See below for more details on our methodology.
Pioneer Title Agency Celebrates $30,000 Goal with Northern Arizona Leaders for “Take a Hike” Initiative
(PHOENIX, July 9, 2015)- To celebrate surpassing the $30,000 goal for the company wide “Take a Hike” initiative, Pioneer Title Agency founder Keith Newlon and Elden branch employees Sarah Landry and Andy Fox hiked Passage 34 of the Arizona Trail with Flagstaff leaders including, Flagstaff Mayor Jerry Neighbors, CEO of Greater Flagstaff Chamber Julie Pastrick, and Executive Vice President of Alliance Bank Sherry Slayton.
“It was incredible to share part of our company efforts with the local leaders in Flagstaff,” said Newlon. “Knowing that we hit our $30,000 goal to help the Arizona Trail made this an even bigger celebration.”
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pioneer Title Agency, the Arizona-based, family owned business partnered with the Arizona Trail Association – also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Arizona Trail- to “Take a Hike,” a first-ever fundraising and employee wellness challenge utilizing the Arizona National Scenic Trail. The Arizona Trail is a continuous path across the state of Arizona and is open to all forms of non-motorized recreation, including hiking, running, backpacking, horseback riding and mountain biking (outside designated wilderness areas).
Through the unique partnership, Pioneer’s team of more than 375 individuals set a goal to raise at least $30,000 in 2015 to support the Arizona Trail. The goal was achieved on June 30th. The community minded team also collectively hiked, biked, ran or rode all 800-plus miles of the Arizona Trail.
